The evaluation of temporomandibular joint involvement in rheumatoid arthritis by clinical findings and mr imaging

AbstractClinical and radiological involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) varies greatly according to data in the literature. Clinical and gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations of the TMJ were performed on 44 TMJ of patients with RA and 28 TMJ of patients without RA. 25% of patient group had subjective symptoms and also 43.1% of this group had physical signs compared with 14.3% of controls. 90.9% of patient group had abnormalities of TMJ on gadolinium-enhanced MR imaging compared with 17.8% of control subjects (P<0.01). Results showed no correlation between the clinical and MRI findings of the TMJ in RA and also suggested that gadolinium-enhanced MRI detected early changes, such as intra-articular soft tissue of TMJ abnormalities in asymptomatic patients with RA. TMJ clinical and MRI follow-up of patients with RA after treatment with anti-rheumatic drugs should be of interest.
