Sarcoidosis: The cause of optic nerve neuropathy
Klinika za očne bolesti Klinički centar, Niš

Abstract

Sarcoidosis is a relatively rare autoimune disease, which, besides affecting a large number of organs, can be manifested in the optical disease as well. The paper points to the importance, frequency and certain medical characteristics of the optic nerve affected by the granulomatous changes that occur due to sarcoidosis. The main characteristic of the optic nerve neuropathy that occurs as a consequence of sarcoidosis is its polymorphism and the ability to involve different parts of the optic nerve. Despite great difficulties in making the accurate diagnosis in many cases, by knowing the clinical presentation of the disease and its manifestations, a timely therapy can be applied, which would spare the patient from unnecessary invasive diagnostic methods.
